Born to a runaway teen and Iroquois Warrior, Genesee struggles to find her place, her loyalties eternally torn between two warring peoples. When the American Revolution sets the Mohawk Valley ablaze, will a young soldier’s love prove strong enough to save her?

GENESEE is an extraordinary book about love, hardship and prejudice. It's well written and full of wonderful characters. Even though they have many differences, Genesee and Alexander are true kindred spirits. Ms. Waldron keeps you enthralled by, a little at a time, giving tantalizing tidbits of their origins. This story isn't sugarcoated, which is really refreshing. There are some instances of violence, but they're brief and handled well. Anyone who enjoys an honest, realistic story will love this one. Renee Burnette

“Genesee is a fascinating look into the early life of upstate New York during the [American Revolution]. Juliet Waldron makes you feel as if you’re experiencing Genesee’s trials and tribulations right along side her. The complex family structures, the interactions of the Dutch settlers with the Seneca nations and other Native American tribes, the atrocities committed in the name of war, Genesee returning to her Indian heritage, are all elements that meld very effectively to make this outstanding story one well worth reading over and over.”

‘ . . . Juliet V. Waldron spins a magical tale of love during the American Revolution in her new historical novel, “Genesee.”
. . . “Genesee” won the EPPIE 2003 award for best historical novel. The award was presented by EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection organization.
. . . The story of confidence in one's self, faith in love and the resilience of the human spirit, “Genesee” is an entertaining romantic adventure set in a young America, but its lessons are timeless.’

This wonderful story takes us deep into the heart of a mixed-blood girl's life, and the conflicts she faces. Named Genesee, after the river, she is half Iroquois, half white (dutch), and her white grandparent's love and protection is the only thing that saves her from a life of abuse and virtual slavery. Her dark skin from her indian father is a daily reminder to the all-white society of Albany New York in 1776, that she is a savage half-breed and not like them. The love of her life arrives in the person of Alexander Dunbar, himself a child of uncertain parentage. They are separated by the violence of civil war as the young nation seeks to stand on its own and reject England's authority. Genesee is caught in the middle when she is abducted by her Indian father and must learn to adapt to the Iroquois culture of her captors in order to survive. Her love for Alexander never fails and she never gives up hope that he will, someday, rescue her. This is historical fiction at its finest with equal infusions of history and a compelling love story that follows Genesee and Alexander as they grow from young, impetuous lovers into the strong people they become when forged by war, deception, societal prejudice, and death.
The author shows great understanding of the time period and her research is extensive and shows in the countless details of life. Don't miss this well written story.

Very well written historical fiction. Parts of the Great Lakes MI Indian lore.
Waldron masterfully weaves historical and social detail of the period into a compelling read. Her wonderfully drawn characters kept me turning the pages, and stayed with me long after I finished the book.
This is a great read. I really felt the depth of the main character as I followed her through her life. Very vivid scenes and richly woven. This author is great!
This was a fabulous read. Genessee has none of the overdone, predictable relationships found in too many romances. Instead, Waldron creates people you might really have known had you been alive during America's earliest days. The Revolutionary war and struggle to live with the Native population come to life outside the bounds of well-known battles and historic sites. This is a real slice of history, with a heroine and her hero in 3-D. I'll be reading it again soon. I hated putting it down.
I was pleasantly surprised with the Pioneer life and Indian life of colonial America which was revealed here. It wasn't glamorous but appeared factual. The story was interesting and I actually cared about the characters. It was romantic with thought about consequences.
I found GENESEE generally well-researched, realistic in many ways, and interesting. The novel hung heavy, almost depressing in places, however. I also found some minor weak areas. In addition, the cover has now been changed, and I think the new one is much less appealing than the old one.

It is unlikely a backwoods Dutch family in 1777 would have had a patchwork quilt, and certainly an Indian with them would be even less likely. The first quilts in America, like in Europe, were whole cloth ones, but these were time consuming and expensive to make. Patchwork isn't as expensive, but it reqires even more time. Those trying to survive the wilderness rarely had the extra time. Patchwork didn't become common until up in the 1800's.

After Jenny goes back to the plantation from Albany, the story slows somewhat, and it almost becomes dark and depressive. For one thing, at first, we get both Jenny's and Alex's point of view. Then, it became only Jenny's, and Alex was harder to like, because I didn't understand where some of his actions were coming from. I needed to know his thoughts. Jenny knew Jean Desbrosses wanted her and that he was ruthless. Therefore, it made little sense that Jenny would believe him when he told her Alex was courting a widow now. After all, Alex had promised to wed Jenny several times and even given her a handfast ring. The action picks up again near the end, when her Cayuga father and a band of Irish Tories and Indians capture Jenny. Jenny learns that Jean Desbrosses has been playing both sides for profit during the war, and Black Wolf plans to trick his final efforts to wed Jenny, yet the man never turns up in the novel again. I hate loose ends like this.

The story has a resolution and ending, but it is short and rather ordinary. It was told as much as shown. This was somewhat of a letdown. I thought perhaps it was set up for a sequel, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I still consider the novel to be a good historical romance, however.
This stirring tale begins in 1761 in America.
It transported me into the untamed frontier land around the Mohawk River. From the pigeon and rabbit pie, the exquisite gowns worn by the gentry in Albany, to the clothing and lifestyle of the Indians, the writer's painstaking research shines through.

Times were harsh, with danger lurking around every corner in a land that was being engulfed by revolution. At the same time, amidst the carnage and bloodshed, there were also scenes of gentle beauty.

Genesee (Jenny) van Cortlandt, is the daughter of a wealthy Dutch American girl, Alyda, and an Indian brave, Black Wolf. She is a worthy heroine who is trapped between two worlds, that of her white mother and her Indian father.

Captured by Indians, Jenny desperately holds on to the hand fasting pledge (a Scottish Highland tradition that equates to marriage) that was sealed between her and Alexander Dunbar when he gave her his mother's silver ring.

Alexander is a captain in the Patriot Army. He undertakes a perilous journey, and is prepared to risk torture and even death to rescue Jenny, the woman he loves.

If you like historical romance with plenty of action, you will love this story.
